So I was born on the mission field in the jungle in Indonesia. And when they came back to New Zealand, they came back when I was two years old, 117 00:05:56.000 --> 00:06:02.320 and then they became pastors. And so my whole life has been in a missions context and a ministry 118 00:06:02.320 --> 00:06:08.560 context. And my first job, you know, when I was 20 years old, my first proper job was working for 119 00:06:08.560 --> 00:06:15.280 a church. So my life has been surrounded by a whole lot of religion, a whole lot of church, 120 00:06:15.760 --> 00:06:21.120 I've pastored a church myself for over a decade, I've been doing missions for basically 121 00:06:21.120 --> 00:06:29.440 forever. And so my trade in my life has basically been the gospel. My trade has been church, 122 00:06:29.440 --> 00:06:34.880 has been ministry, has been the gospel. But despite like a whole lifetime of religion, 123 00:06:34.880 --> 00:06:42.400 a lifetime of Christianity, secretly, even as a pastor in my own heart, I had a place of darkness 124 00:06:42.400 --> 00:06:47.520 and dysfunction. I want to, as we start this journey, I want to take back the veil for you 125 00:06:47.520 --> 00:06:54.720 and let you see inside my heart and inside my world of basically what was a slave and an orphan 126 00:06:54.720 --> 00:07:01.840 existence. It was kind of festering below the surface inside of me. And one of the things that, 127 00:07:01.840 --> 00:07:06.080 because I wasn't conscious, I wasn't aware, I didn't realize that I was living the slave 128 00:07:06.080 --> 00:07:12.960 existence. I thought my dysfunctional normal was all there was. I thought this was our lot. 129 00:07:12.960 --> 00:07:20.080 And then something happened, I read John 17, 23, and it kind of shocked me because I didn't 130 00:07:20.080 --> 00:07:27.280 believe it. So here's what John 17, 23 said, it said, then the world will know that you have sent 131 00:07:27.280 --> 00:07:33.840 me and have loved them even as you have loved me. And this triggered something 132 00:07:34.400 --> 00:07:41.920 in me, like this woke something up in me where I realized, oh my gosh, I do not believe 133 00:07:41.920 --> 00:07:49.120 that at all. I do not believe that God loves me the same as he loves his own son. 134 00:07:49.120 --> 00:08:01.520 I just did not believe that. If I kind of go back into my story, one of the things that first 135 00:08:01.520 --> 00:08:08.320 started getting my heart rooted in shame was when I was a kid, I was probably only about 136 00:08:08.320 --> 00:08:14.000 six years old and we would play doctors and nurses with a bunch of other random kids. And 137 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:18.960 so sometimes we'd get naked and it was probably more of a curious time rather than anyone doing 138 00:08:18.960 --> 00:08:24.720 anything intentionally to be real wicked or twisted, but we'd get naked and play silly games. 139 00:08:24.800 --> 00:08:30.480 And just from that time, I just began to believe that I was unworthy. I just had, I felt 140 00:08:31.440 --> 00:08:38.080 shame come in my life. I felt unworthy. I felt this defilement and, you know, your secrets 141 00:08:38.080 --> 00:08:44.000 and your shame will be your own story. We can't compare, but this was my story and it brought 142 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:49.200 up the sense of shame. And there's a difference between shame and guilt. See, guilt is the 143 00:08:49.200 --> 00:08:54.000 feeling that you've done something wrong. And I felt that plenty of times for sure, but shame 144 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:58.880 is the belief that there's something intrinsically wrong with who you are. And at the core of my 145 00:08:58.880 --> 00:09:03.280 heart, at the core of who I was, I believed that there was something intrinsically wrong with me. 146 00:09:03.280 --> 00:09:10.320 And it just totally damaged my sense of value, damaged my sense of worth. I was in this place of 147 00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:16.560 shame and shame, it always leads to self-hatred and self-hatred always leads to isolation, 148 00:09:16.560 --> 00:09:20.800 leads to us putting up walls. And I don't know if you know what it's like to put up 149 00:09:20.800 --> 00:09:25.120 walls and to isolate, but this was my world. I was putting up walls, I was putting up 150 00:09:25.120 --> 00:09:31.520 veils, I was putting up these blocks and covering and veiling and just hiding and isolating the 151 00:09:31.520 --> 00:09:41.840 space of shame and inadequacy on the inside of me. I felt so dirty and defiled and unworthy. 152 00:09:41.840 --> 00:09:46.960 And you know what? I started like this world of condemnation started flowing. So I would be, 153 00:09:46.960 --> 00:09:52.080 I had this terrible negative talk, like speaking to myself, real down on myself, 154 00:09:52.080 --> 00:09:56.960 real negative things about myself. And then at the same time in this place of 155 00:09:58.160 --> 00:09:59.840 really wanting to know God, but 156 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:09.280 having all of this going on inside me and not believing that I was worthy of God's love. 157 00:10:09.280 --> 00:10:14.240 So when I read John 17, 23 and he said, the world will know that you sent me and have loved them 158 00:10:14.240 --> 00:10:18.960 even as you have loved me, this triggered me. I didn't believe it was true. I was like, 159 00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:26.320 how is this even possible, God? How is this even possible? Because what I believed is I thought 160 00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:31.600 that Jesus, because Jesus was the 10 out of 10 son, right? Jesus did everything perfect. I thought 161 00:10:31.600 --> 00:10:38.400 he's worthy of 10 out of 10 love, but me, my performance, it is rubbish and I'm only going 162 00:10:38.400 --> 00:10:44.640 to be worthy of the scraps of love. So when I heard this, that God said, no, Jesus said, 163 00:10:44.640 --> 00:10:49.360 the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you've loved me. I was like, 164 00:10:49.360 --> 00:10:52.800 what is going on here? And it triggered to me to something that something's wrong. I'm not 165 00:10:52.880 --> 00:10:57.680 living in that. I don't understand it because in my heart it was full of condemnation. It was full 166 00:10:57.680 --> 00:11:03.120 of darkness. It was full of inadequacy and shame and self-hatred. And I would actually, you know, 167 00:11:03.120 --> 00:11:07.600 I would try and get close to God as well. And so I'd be performing on this hamster wheel of 168 00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:11.840 performance, always trying to do the things right, always trying and inevitably failing. 169 00:11:11.840 --> 00:11:17.680 Now religion is such a terrible master. It demands perfection and then prophesies failure. I was 170 00:11:17.680 --> 00:11:23.200 caught up in this place, right, where religion demanded perfection, but prophesied failure. 171 00:11:24.560 --> 00:11:29.760 And I had this twisted belief inside of me as well, right, that if I condemn myself more, 172 00:11:29.760 --> 00:11:34.960 then maybe I would behave better. I didn't know you could experience 176 00:11:52.320 --> 00:11:58.560 the manifest love of God. I didn't know you could experience the tangible glory of God. And I lived 177 00:11:58.560 --> 00:12:04.640 disconnected. I lived in love deficit. I didn't know that you could live overwhelmed by the love 178 00:12:04.640 --> 00:12:10.400 and the glory of God. I didn't know about encounters. I was disconnected. I was reliant 179 00:12:10.400 --> 00:12:15.600 on my own performance and I used condemnation to try and drive my performance. And it was a 180 00:12:15.600 --> 00:12:21.520 bitter, twisted, vicious cycle of religion that left me infused with darkness. And this is even 181 00:12:21.520 --> 00:12:27.040 as a pastor, right, even as a pastor, I'm trying to lead other people, you know, towards God. Now step by step, Papa, you know, 183 00:12:36.560 --> 00:12:41.440 he began to speak into my love deficit. He began to speak into my dysfunction.
