In December of 1862, Alcott traveled to 
Washington, DC to serve as a nurse ina 
Union hospital. Six weeks later she 
contracted typhoid and returned home to | 
Concord, Massachusetts. rare May Alcott 
Hospital Sketches, her first work to receive wide critical 

and popular notice, was published a year later and is a 
fictionalized account of her sometimes grim, occasionally 
humorous, and frequently poignant experiences caring 

for wounded soldiers.
